Simplified trademark protection in Canada and Indonesia
Anyone who sells products or services in Canada or Indonesia and needs trademark protection for this purpose previously had to go through elaborate and complicated application procedures. In Canada, the application had to be “supported”, e.g. by a home trademark, or the trademark could only be registered after proving its use in the country. In Indonesia, the procedure was extremely lengthy and fraught with obstacles.
In the future, trademark protection will be much easier and less expensive in both countries. Canada and Indonesia recently joined the Madrid System for the International Registration of Marks (IR Marks). This international registration system, to which 121 countries now belong, considerably simplifies and standardizes the procedure and does not require legal representatives abroad.
Even already existing international trademarks can be extended to the mentioned countries or other member countries without further ado. A current list of all member countries of the IR trademark system can be found here. .
We will be happy to provide you with advice and assistance for the protection of your trademarks abroad.
